vilicom sets about designing and building a network out at sea.

Vilicom and Mavenir to deliver Open RAN network for windfarm connectivity

Vilicom will use Mavenir's MAVair as a critical component in its first offshore private LTE network. Designed to improve windfarm connectivity and communication, the Open RAN project will use Mavenir's innovative cloud-based solution.

MAVair's Open Virtualised RAN (Open vRAN) architecture, designed around virtualisation techniques, enables RAN to adapt and flex based on coverage and usage. This cloud-native solution will allow Vilicom to provide a reliable, high throughput connectivity solution that is fully scalable and meets low latency requirements for deployment in a challenging environment.

The software app will run on commoditised hardware providing a single architecture for a range of uses. In turn, this provides agility, a high degree of flexibility and cost-effectiveness for network operators.

Vilicom network

Vilicom is at the forefront of designing and managing global networks across 20 countries and four continents. System integration services encompass data, wireless technology and intelligent analytics that deliver unprecedented efficiencies and productivity.

The Vilicom network enables advanced connectivity and communication for sea vessels and workers engaged in working with windfarms off the coast of Scotland. This connectivity allows workers to send emails and make video calls while out at sea.

In choosing Mavenir, Vilicom is demonstrating its continued commitment to working with a range of technology providers to deliver the best possible solutions for challenging situations.

Building the future

Mavenir is currently pioneering its advanced technology through a single software-based network that can run on any cloud. This makes Mavenir the industry's only end-to-end cloud-based provider, allowing it to focus on improving the way the world connects.

In partnering with Vilicom, it brings its technical expertise to a highly challenging and complex private network system.

Moray East

One of a pair of wind farms in the Moray Firth designed to deliver electricity using renewable energy. Moray East is a 950MW installation situated 22km off the east coast of Scotland. Covering an area of 295 sq km, the completed project will be capable of generating up to 40% of Scotland's energy. In addition, it will power 950,000 homes in the UK.

According to Sean Keating, CEO of Vilicom, building efficiencies into the construction and operation of a wind farm at scale can be challenging without the support of reliable and superfast connectivity. Keating says Vilicom will provide network projectivity across the project's sea fleet, providing functionality and communication between workers at sea, but also to homes and family and for leisure purposes.

Stefano Cantarelli, Chief Marketing Officer of Mavenir, said his company was delighted to be partnering with Vilicom to develop the private network. Cantarelli added that private networks were becoming increasingly prevalent and that Mavenir looked forward to collaborating with Vilicom on future applications and use cases.

The Moray East project highlights the importance and relevance of high-speed communications in such situations, for productivity and mental wellbeing. Moray Firth East is currently under construction with pre-assemble work on the 100 turbines taking place at Global Energy's facility at Nigg. The wind farm is expected to be operational by 2022.
