I’m one of the lead Construction Managers for the construction arm of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. Our teams manage a variety of packages such as cladding, steel frames, concrete and flooring for many types of sites, including shopping centres, commercial buildings and residential schemes. These rely on a mixture of people – some freelance, some permanent.
The managers we hire need to cope with a high workload. They have to be smart, capable and quick on their toes. We run lean teams with ultra-fast delivery – so they can’t be afraid of being in the spotlight either.
Why BuildSpace?
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield already had a great relationship with BuildSpace – our preferred supplier – when I joined four years ago. I took the reins and found that Tony and the team are an engaged, fast-acting source of talent. They know the way we do business intimately too, which is crucial in order to find a good fit because every contractor is different.
Turnaround often needs to be quick. For freelance roles, we typically run a two-stage interview process, with a three-week window from our initial sit-down to starting on-site. BuildSpace will usually give us CVs the very same day we make contact, and they’re good at chasing us to move the process along. It’s a big help to our internal HR team.
Our relationship
Over the years, BuildSpace have sourced perm staff for us, as well as freelancers – who get snapped up if you wait too long. If Tony ever comes across someone who he thinks would meet our standards, he’ll always give us a call and let us know. In this way, we get access before they’re available to our competitors.
BuildSpace aren’t like other recruiters; they’re never too pushy or try to deliver any old candidate to you. Whenever Tony’s name comes up on my phone, I know it’s worth answering. As a Director of BuildSpace, that willingness to speak to us and not put himself above his colleagues speaks volumes.
Looking ahead
We’re currently building a site that will become an office for HMRC. As usual, we’ve kept BuildSpace in the loop in case we need to source freelancers for the end of the project, to lift us over the line.
